KC-based moombahton champ, Brent Tactic, recently chatted with moombahton pioneer and inventor, Dave Nada, just after Nada’s show at Luna in Kansas City just a couple of weeks ago. The video at the bottom of the page, directed by Clint Wynn, offers a sneak peek into the flames that Dave Nada brought through to Luna.
Brent Tactic: How does the summer of moombahton in 2011 differ from 2010? Tell me about some standout moments/milestones/etc of this summer…
Dave Nada: People are starting to push moombahton in their own cities and hometowns across the world. It’s exciting to see scenes grow all over the place and hearing new approaches and styles of the music from their area. Kansas City for example! Some of the standout moments so far have been all 3 of the Moombahton Massives at U st Music Hall in Washington DC (including Vegas), HARD fest in LA, Mad Decent Block Party in LA, and Nadastrom playing the legendary Do Over party in LA as well. Amazing experiences and had a great sense of camaraderie within the international moombahton scenes. Oh…and probably our biggest achieving moments this summer was traveling to Ecuador to film our very first music video. Gonna be crazy!
BT: How was your trip to the Midwest to bring this budding sound to a relatively undiscovered (arguably under appreciated) market? How did things go and did the reception meet or exceed expectations?
DN: It was fantastic. Watching a club go nuts for an all moombahton all night event was exciting and inspiring. People knew the words to a lot of the tracks and were excited over new ones. Can’t ask for anything more really.
BT: From a Midwest and national standpoint…any moombahton artists/djs we should keep an eye on or budding markets in general you think we should watch out for?
DN: Really excited about JWLS from Miami, as well as Steve Starks who’s beginning to produce some amazing new moombahton that’s pretty fresh to my ears. I really like Javier Estrada, Bro Safari, Billy The Gent, Long Jawns and them Sazon Booya boys. Great new stuff coming out!
BT: You mentioned to me the label you and Matt are starting…what’s the name again and tell me about JWLS/Steve Starks/other releases on the horizon…
DN: It’s called Diabluma Sound. We’re working on a few releases by JWLS, Starks, Boyfriend and as well as some new Nadastrom stuff. Really excited about the new music we’re hearing from them.
BT: What’s next for you and Nadastrom and what releases/tours/events should we be watching out for?
DN: We’re gearing up for our big North American tour with Skrillex and 12th Planet called The Mothership Tour. Playing over 51 cities! We’re releasing a moombahton EP on Scion this fall titled “El Baile Diabluma” which features cats like Sabo, Munchi, Jen Lasher and more I can’t mention at the moment. Should be a crazy fall!
Skrillex’s Mothership tour with Nadastrom (Dave Nada & Matt Nordstrom) hits Liberty Hall in Lawrence, KS on Nov. 2nd with the already confirmed Dillon Francis afterparty at the Granada.

Mayer Hawthorne is scheduled to touch down here in Kansas City for Chromeo’s Night Falls Tour on October 20th at the Midland Theater downtown. All you planetary underground funkateers should bring yourselves to this show (and a dancing partner). This is his latest mix, recorded live at the Do Over party in Los Angeles just a couple of weeks ago, jam packed with over forty minutes of funk, old school hip hop and disco. Watch out for his new album, “How Do You Do, slated for release on October 11th.

Over the past year or so, the venue formerly known as Blaney’s (421 Westport Road) in Midtown Kansas City has hosted a slew of great parties at their multi-level space, now known as The Union of Westport as of December 2010. Since going live with the new guise and management, The Union has put on some awesome regular DJ events. $WAG, Superb!, Risky Disco, and additionally dope DJ acts like David Heartbreak (DC), Skinny Friedman (NYC/Philly), Spank Rock (Baltimore) are just a few events and out of town acts that have had The Union popping off every weekend since the Spring. Locals Shaun Duval, NMEZEE, cQuence, Morri$, DJ Maxx and others come to mind as well.
With the fall season looming (hoodie weather, anyone?) we thought it would only be right to take a moment to salute our DJ scene at home, and to show appreciation to The Union of Westport for opening their doors to abstract club music…and for never charging a cover at the door for its patrons. As a local music enthusiast, it’s interesting to see other venues in town charge $10 at the door for an out-of-town DJ who many may not be familiar with, while The Union is packed every weekend. A lot of random people plus no cover charge equals a guaranteed great time, almost regardless of who’s spinning. It allows people to cut loose quite a bit more without necessarily expecting a return for their dollars at the door.
With old man winter probably rubbing his hands with glee by now, ready to come out of summer hibernation and descend his wrath upon us, The Union’s spacious patio will be degraded to a mere smoking section. But we at u:move would highly encourage all of our readers to continue to support The Union and the DJs they bring through well into the winter months, because dancing knows no season.

Most who did not grow up in the 80s would likely be familiar with at least one song from British synth-pop new wave band, The Human League, who got their start in the late 70s. That song being the super cheesy, “Don’t You Want Me” (you’d know it if you heard it). But their 1981 triple-platinum album, Dare, is widely credited with influencing various electronic artists from then until now such as La Roux, Madonna, Moby and more. Having worked with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, attended Grammy Awards shows and seeing over 20 million of their records fly off the shelves at record stores around the globe, their show at the Uptown Theater on Friday (Sept. 16) is not one to miss if you remember the 80s halfway decently. Their newest album, Credo, was released in March of this year.
80s baby? If you can drop a comment on this post with your best “Why I should win free tickets to Human League at Uptown” story, you will win a pair of tickets to The Human League show at the Uptown Theater this Friday. May the most rad of 80s babies win!

This latest moombahton remix cooked up from the Tactic duo comes from Brent. You may remember Lawrence-based, Norrit’s 100%, absolutely, completely fantastic Now Jack Swung EP from 2010. Well, Brent flipped one of the standouts on that release, “Nobody Baby” (Doc Daneeka’s Remix) into yet another silky moombahsoul groove.

Apologies for all this moombah-overload as of late (but not really). Regardless of whether or not moombahton is best appreciated when girls are shaking their asses to it in the club (which we would agree with), that’s just more of a reason for you to make it out to the next moombahton event that Think 2Wice is putting on. Whenever it is, and whoever is headlining, will not be anything to mess around with, especially if it’s a free party like the Dave Nada event at Luna was this past Friday. I’m trying to think of a punchy “moombahton”-related line to end this post with, but I think I’ve exhausted all my previous ones.
