KC-based moombahton champ, Brent Tactic, recently chatted with moombahton pioneer and inventor, Dave Nada, just after Nada’s show at Luna in Kansas City just a couple of weeks ago. The video at the bottom of the page, directed by Clint Wynn, offers a sneak peek into the flames that Dave Nada brought through to Luna.
Brent Tactic: How does the summer of moombahton in 2011 differ from 2010? Tell me about some standout moments/milestones/etc of this summer…
Dave Nada: People are starting to push moombahton in their own cities and hometowns across the world. It’s exciting to see scenes grow all over the place and hearing new approaches and styles of the music from their area. Kansas City for example! Some of the standout moments so far have been all 3 of the Moombahton Massives at U st Music Hall in Washington DC (including Vegas), HARD fest in LA, Mad Decent Block Party in LA, and Nadastrom playing the legendary Do Over party in LA as well. Amazing experiences and had a great sense of camaraderie within the international moombahton scenes. Oh…and probably our biggest achieving moments this summer was traveling to Ecuador to film our very first music video. Gonna be crazy!
BT: How was your trip to the Midwest to bring this budding sound to a relatively undiscovered (arguably under appreciated) market? How did things go and did the reception meet or exceed expectations?
DN: It was fantastic. Watching a club go nuts for an all moombahton all night event was exciting and inspiring. People knew the words to a lot of the tracks and were excited over new ones. Can’t ask for anything more really.
BT: From a Midwest and national standpoint…any moombahton artists/djs we should keep an eye on or budding markets in general you think we should watch out for?
DN: Really excited about JWLS from Miami, as well as Steve Starks who’s beginning to produce some amazing new moombahton that’s pretty fresh to my ears. I really like Javier Estrada, Bro Safari, Billy The Gent, Long Jawns and them Sazon Booya boys. Great new stuff coming out!
BT: You mentioned to me the label you and Matt are starting…what’s the name again and tell me about JWLS/Steve Starks/other releases on the horizon…
DN: It’s called Diabluma Sound. We’re working on a few releases by JWLS, Starks, Boyfriend and as well as some new Nadastrom stuff. Really excited about the new music we’re hearing from them.
BT: What’s next for you and Nadastrom and what releases/tours/events should we be watching out for?
DN: We’re gearing up for our big North American tour with Skrillex and 12th Planet called The Mothership Tour. Playing over 51 cities! We’re releasing a moombahton EP on Scion this fall titled “El Baile Diabluma” which features cats like Sabo, Munchi, Jen Lasher and more I can’t mention at the moment. Should be a crazy fall!
Skrillex’s Mothership tour with Nadastrom (Dave Nada & Matt Nordstrom) hits Liberty Hall in Lawrence, KS on Nov. 2nd with the already confirmed Dillon Francis afterparty at the Granada.
