Over the past year or so, the venue formerly known as Blaney’s (421 Westport Road) in Midtown Kansas City has hosted a slew of great parties at their multi-level space, now known as The Union of Westport as of December 2010. Since going live with the new guise and management, The Union has put on some awesome regular DJ events. $WAG, Superb!, Risky Disco, and additionally dope DJ acts like David Heartbreak (DC), Skinny Friedman (NYC/Philly), Spank Rock (Baltimore) are just a few events and out of town acts that have had The Union popping off every weekend since the Spring. Locals Shaun Duval, NMEZEE, cQuence, Morri$, DJ Maxx and others come to mind as well.
With the fall season looming (hoodie weather, anyone?) we thought it would only be right to take a moment to salute our DJ scene at home, and to show appreciation to The Union of Westport for opening their doors to abstract club music…and for never charging a cover at the door for its patrons. As a local music enthusiast, it’s interesting to see other venues in town charge $10 at the door for an out-of-town DJ who many may not be familiar with, while The Union is packed every weekend. A lot of random people plus no cover charge equals a guaranteed great time, almost regardless of who’s spinning. It allows people to cut loose quite a bit more without necessarily expecting a return for their dollars at the door.
With old man winter probably rubbing his hands with glee by now, ready to come out of summer hibernation and descend his wrath upon us, The Union’s spacious patio will be degraded to a mere smoking section. But we at u:move would highly encourage all of our readers to continue to support The Union and the DJs they bring through well into the winter months, because dancing knows no season.
Well said!
