Dance music’s gateway DJ

If you are into progressive house and you are familiar with the St. Louis club scene, then it’s likely that you are in the loop with Rob Lemon.  Rob has been moving crowds in the Lou for over a decade.  In 2006, Rob formed X-1 with production partner Byron Thomas.  Their first release “Hypnosis,” on Curvve Recordings made a huge buzz on progressive house charts and was spun by many heavy hitters including Paul Van Dyk, David Guetta, Sharam and Sander Kleinenberg.

What are you working on in the studio right now?
Byron and I are finishing a series of new releases we have been working on this past winter.  Since our Hypnosis release, we took some steps back to figure out what music we really wanted to be known for rather than chasing trends.  We are really happy with how the new tracks turned out.

How would you describe the music you produce vs. the music you play out?
The music I produce tends to be progressive house.  I typically play this sound at gigs during peak time, however I play all types of gigs, ranging from eight hour solo sets to opening for international DJs like Tiesto, Sharam and Sander Kleinenberg.  I enjoy the opening gigs because they can be challenging and can require a lot of music control.  I may start out with deep house, then move into tech house and finish up with tracks that I produce.  When headlining, I try to start out with my own tracks and end it with some peak time progressive house.  It all depends on the vibe of the room when I start and where I want the vibe to be when I am finished.

Are you still producing as X-1?
We are not at this time.  X-1 was just an electro-experiment which turned out much larger than we expected.  It was amazing to have Sharam play our track Hypnosis on the Essential Mix, David Guetta play it at Creamfields and Paul van Dyke can-it at massive gigs around the world. Now we are really concentrating on the progressive style of music that we really love.

What have been your three top all time favorite gigs?
1. Opening for Tiesto at the Uptown Theater in Kansas City
2. Opening for Benny Benassi at Dante’s in St. Louis
3. (Tie) The Church - Denver / Spybar - Chicago

Will you be playing in Miami this year?
I am sitting Miami out this year to focus on productions.

Name your current favorite track that you are playing out right now. Must be other than your own.
Second Sun - Golden (Sultan & Ned Sheppard’s Solid Gold Mix)

Who is your favorite producer?
16Bit Lolitas

What advice can you give to up and coming DJs.
Buy Global Underground CDs.  They will teach you how to warm up a room when opening for another DJ.  Once you have that down, the rest is easy…

Cake or Pie?
Cake as long as it is not wedding cake!

Rob’s upcoming gigs include the opening slot for Sander Kleinenburg at Home Nightclub in St. Louis March 20.  He will also be making an appearance at u:move’s March 21 f**kinA! party.
